Why the wheel wasn’t used in Mesoamerica — understanding functional design

The explanation is simple: not every design is necessary everywhere. This is where the concept of functional design comes into play.
Every October 12th, the debate resurfaces about whether the wheel existed in the Americas before the arrival of the Spanish, often treated as a hallmark of an “advanced civilization.” This discussion is actually a great example of how designs and inventions adapt to their environment.
👉 The wheel is not effective in mountains ⛰️, jungles 🌿, stepped paths, or steep slopes. Basically the kinds of terrain found throughout much of North and Central America.
👉 There were no horses, mules, or oxen to pull wheeled vehicles 🐴
Archaeologists have found many ancient toys, whistles, and flutes with wheels and rollers. It is also known that paved roads were flattened using heavy cylindrical rollers. Given this, it seems unlikely that no one ever thought of using the wheel more broadly. The most reasonable theory is that neither the terrain, the climate, nor their belief systems made widespread use of the wheel practical.
How they solved transportation instead:
→ They used canoes, which were extremely fast 🚣🏻♀️
→ They relied on llamas 🦙, animals capable of jumping and moving along narrow paths
→ Specialized human carriers 🏃 traveled across all types of routes
Even so, Mesoamerican societies built bridges, causeways, roads, carved passages through mountains, and constructed ports and boats capable of carrying more than 40 people.
There were also other major obstacles. Building and maintaining, over the long term, the infrastructure required for wheeled transportation would have been extremely difficult and costly.

It is also possible, at least in theory, that this was a society in which daily life revolved around appeasing the gods through sacrifice and hard labor, with the promise of reward in the afterlife. From that perspective, the wheel may have been impractical not only for physical and material reasons, but also for spiritual and cultural ones.
